Maryland uses a weighted average calculation or minimum benefit and in this case, the WAT was less than the money we paid them 6 years ago. When we asked them for the tuition reimbursement for the Fall semester of 2020, they gave us the exact same amount of $ we gave them 6 years prior and told us this was the minimum benefit and they could not give us any gains b/c our funds were pooled and others received the gains. Essentially we have learned that those who use the funds for out of state schools subsidize those who go in state. We were told specifically by the prepaid program director in an email, “this is not your money.”

Happy to share more and/or write an article so that others don’t fall victim.

Please share the story, as all prepaid plans (including Maryland) have some way to transfer the credits to out-of-state schools. Yes, the value may not be the same, but you don’t lose you money or get $0.

We received $0 after 6 years of investing in the plan while the plan kept the gains on our funds. This was a terrible investment and we were misled by the brochures and marketing materials we relied upon from 8-10 years ago.

I had put total $18914. I took out $5000 and another $4734 but balance was only $2574.33, instead of $9180.00 I lost over $6605.67. I asked them why and I jest of the answer was that value of GET unit decreased and also there are fees associated with the loan. They mentioned that I was told about it in email and letters. My problem was that I trusted the state, I never expected to lose any of the money I gave them. Do not put any money into any state education fund system unless you have a financial adviser.

I didn’t even know these existed. I don’t think we have them in Canada. Here you can get student loans and pay them off interest free while you are in school. Once you graduate though you pay interest after 6 months. We also have the RESP plan where parents can put aside money for college and the government matches that investment up to a maximum.
