Yes, since the course is provided by a qualified Title IV school, the professional program qualifies. Since this is a professional course, the only eligible expense would be the tuition for the course paid to the school, as well as any books or supplies on the syllabus required for the course. Things like room and board are not covered for this type of program.

We are looking at using the plan for a coding boot camp and CFP certification programs through the University of Texas in Austin Center for Professional Education. We were wondering if they would be considered qualified education expenses under the 529 Plan. When we asked the University of Texas they said to contact our plan administrator at Vanguard. When we contacted Vanguard they said to speak to a tax professional. We seem to be hitting many brick walls and were wondering if you had any idea if these tuition and possible housing expenses would qualify for 529 Plans.

Some details about the courses….

-University of Texas Austin is a qualified university per IRS 970
-Tuition is invoiced as a registration fee, no 1098T is furnished
-No cost of attendance is listed for the program
-Per UT, professional education programs are listed as non academic
-Both are considered to be Professional Certificate Programs.

For reference here are the links for the UT programs as well:

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No, transportation is one of the few expenses explicitly called out as not qualifying.

Transportation is not provided by the school, nor is public transportation an option (doesn’t exist) Can I claim the parking pass as an expense as he is essentially required to have a car at school to fulfill the course obligation?

Assuming the apprenticeship is registered with the DOL, you can use the 529 plan for fees, books, supplies, and equipment required. It does not allow for room and board.
